# File attachments

> Attach files to your conversations for additional context

You can attach files to a Chat conversation either from your connected files or upload from your computer.

## How to Attach Files

**1. Click Attach File**

Click the "Attach file" button in the chat input area.

**2. Select Files**

Choose files already in Realm or upload new ones from your device.

**3. Ask Your Question**

Type your question about the attached files and send.

> [!NOTE]
>
> By default, you can attach up to **20 files** to each Chat message.

> [!TIP]
>
> Realm supports documents, spreadsheets, presentations, images, code, and more. See [Supported file types](https://docs.withrealm.com/knowledge/supported-file-types.md) for the full list.

## Sending while a file uploads

You can also paste a file, such as a screenshot, or drop it into the chat input. You don't need to wait for the upload to finish: press send right away. Realm sends your message as soon as the file reaches Realm and answers once the file is ready.

If a file can't be uploaded or read, Realm tells you which file failed and doesn't answer without it. Remove the file or attach it again, then send your message again.

## ZIP files

You can attach a ZIP file to share a whole folder at once — for example a source code tree or a set of configuration files. The AI extracts the archive in its workspace and works with the files inside, including file types that are not supported as individual uploads.

## Example Queries

* "Summarize the key points from this contract"
* "What are the main findings in this research report?"
* "Extract all the dates and deadlines from this document"
* "Compare the data in these two spreadsheets"
